Julian Costello Quartet

The Hermon

"The musical and cultural polarity displayed by this International group from their diverse backgrounds is proof that open music can provide the perfect meeting place to create something unique." - Iain Ballamy

“Julian Costello is a sax lyricist, telling his stories of life’s ups and downs with perfect alteration of tone to impart strength, humour and even frailty at times whilst the other players intuitively alter their stances, apart from their solo passages, where their inner nature springs to the fore.”

- Sammy Stein for Jazz in Europe

“…full of warmth and humanity,…..inventive soloing.” - Bruce Lindsay for All About Jazz

Hermon Jazz welcomes back London-based saxophonist Julian Costello, this time with his formidable quartet featuring musicians from the UK, Poland, Canada and Italy. Formed in 2016, the group scooped up plenty of recognition for their first collective recording Transitions’ in 2017 produced at the Artesuono Studios in Udine in Italy with ECM-engineer Stefano Amerio and released on 33Jazz records. After prolific touring in the UK, France, Poland, Germany and Belgium the band is now on the verge to releasing their new album ‘Connections: Without Borders’. Strongly motivated by culturally diverse influences, Costello recorded in the Oslo studios of Norwegian pianist Øystein Sevåg in Norway with Berlin-engineer Sebastian Ohmert. Costello shares his thinking regarding the process of creating music collectively: “Music doesn't have boundaries and nor should it! Our new album is inspired by how musicians and music travels like nature. Open to new ideas and influences from what should be an open world when sadly some choose to put up borders.”
